Deck the Halls and Embrace Christmas Tree Care and Maintenance this Holiday Season
The American Christmas Tree Association Recommends Proper Care and Maintenance of Artificial and Live Christmas Trees This Holiday Season
November 27, 2023 – The American Christmas Tree Association’s (ACTA) 2023 Consumer Survey found that almost 70 percent of consumers display their Christmas and winter decorations, including their Christmas tree, before December.
“Christmas trees – artificial, live, small, tall, you name it – are at the core of how we celebrate the Christmas season,” said Jami Warner, ACTA Executive Director. “To ensure a safe and joyful holiday season, we urge consumers to consider practicing Christmas tree care and maintenance, no matter the tree they display.”
This year, 94 percent of consumers plan to display at least one Christmas tree in their home. 77 percent will display an artificial Christmas tree. When asked what they appreciated most about displaying an artificial Christmas tree, 65 percent of consumers listed easy set-up and take-down, and 49 percent listed easy maintenance as the primary reason for purchasing an artificial Christmas tree.
“Properly caring for your artificial Christmas tree will extend its lifespan, making it a sustainable and economical choice,” said Warner. “Artificial Christmas trees can be used for an average of 10 years, but if cared for properly, a good quality tree can be reused for 20 years. Regular maintenance will ensure your artificial Christmas tree maintains its great shape and its appearance for many holiday seasons to come.”
Artificial Christmas Tree Care Tips:
Before decorating an artificial Christmas tree, lightly dust the tips to prevent build-up. Use a dense fiber duster or a clean, dry cloth.
Set up the artificial Christmas tree in a cool, dry place, away from direct heat or sunlight.
Avoid spraying water, soap, vinegar, or other cleaning agents that may affect the tree's quality.
Check outlets and light cords on pre-lit Christmas trees and string lights for fraying or damage.
Before storing an artificial Christmas tree for the off-season, place the artificial Christmas tree in a durable storage bag to prevent the accumulation of dust and dirt. Store the artificial Christmas tree in a cool, dry location to protect it from moisture and musty odor.
Approximately 23 percent of surveyed consumers will display a live Christmas tree this year.
“For consumers who will buy a live Christmas tree this year, water the tree frequently and dispose of it once it has dried,” said Warner. “Live Christmas trees will last around four weeks after purchasing, and keeping a dry tree in the home increases the likelihood of a fire.”
Live Christmas Tree Care Tips:
Before bringing a Christmas tree into the home, cut the trunk one inch from the bottom before putting it in the stand.
Check water levels to ensure it never goes below the tree base, and water the Christmas tree frequently.
Check for falling needles and trim dried or broken branches to maintain their shape and reduce debris.
Check outlets and string light cords for any fraying or damage.
It is important to practice fire safety when setting up and displaying both artificial and live Christmas trees.
“Seeing consumers eager to set up their décor this year is a great reminder of the joy Christmas trees bring to our homes every season,” said Warner. “Even in the chaos and rush of the holiday season, it only takes a Christmas tree to create the Christmas spirit.”
